We live in a world characterized by individualism
and isolation. The mobility and busyness of our society have
resulted in the breakdown of supportive relationships. This
has produced people that are lonely
and isolated.
The world
and the forces of evil are daily bombarding us, pulling us apart
from each other and from God, producing ungodly and broken relationships.
People are in need of healthy, supportive relationships.
At The Oaks Fellowship, we believe the church ought to be the
one place in this world where life-giving relationships are
developed. Because we believe in building a strong community
of believers, we believe in our Small Group Ministry.
Small Groups Are Biblical Acts 2:42 tells us that
the New Testament Christians devoted themselves to teaching,
fellowship, the breaking of bread and prayer. Fellowship was
something that was specifically done in homes.
The Bible also tells us to:
- Bear one another’s burdens (Galatians
6:2)
- Encourage one another (Hebrews 10:24)
- Be concerned for each other’s interests
(Philippians 2:4)
- Pray and rejoice with one another
(1 Thessalonians 5:16,17)
Small Groups Provide Community
Bill Hybels, pastor of Willowcreek Community Church defines
"community" as
Where you can...
- Know and be known
- Love and be loved
- Serve and be served
- Celebrate and be celebrated
In a Small Group people develop committed
and trusting relationships with each other and the Lord as they
share their lives and minister to one another’s needs.
Why is
this important?
- Christianity is a life-style, not
simply a set of teachings
- A life-style is learned from another
person’s life
- Close, personal relationships are
essential to learning the Christian life.
Small groups provide the ideal place where
close personal relationships between believers can form and
effective discipling can occur.
Small Groups Provide Fellowship
In a large church like The Oaks, close fellowship with others
can be difficult. Small Groups provide the time and place to
get to know one another better.
Small Groups Provide Ministry
When someone in our church has a need, the Small Group members
are quick to respond and support each other. The closeness of
the group provides a safe place to express needs to one another
and an opportunity to give in ministry.
Small Groups Provide Spiritual Growth
Because the best teachers are those who model their lessons,
Small Groups provide a place for Christians to disciple and
model the Christian walk for new believers. The teachings are
not only taught during the lesson time, but lived out in life.
How do I find a Small Group?
All our
groups are listed in a Small Group Ministry directory
that is available at the Resource Center in the church atrium.
Our groups run on a semester basis. At the beginning of each
semester there is a “Rally Day” where everyone is given an opportunity
to sign up for a group.
Another good way to find a small group is to attend one of our Sunday School classes. You are sure to meet some of our Small Group Leaders in each class. Just ask the Sunday School teacher to introduce you to one of our leaders.
What about childcare?
Our children’s ministry provides The Zone—a special time of fun and teaching for children ages 6-12. And our Tiny Town nursery is open on these nights as well. Parents are welcome to drop their children off while they go to their Small Group meeting.
